8th June 2004
Department of Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi-110025.

On June 8th, 2004 a celestial event of historical scientific importance occured when the silhouette of the planet Venus once again crossed the face of the Sun as seen from the Earth. This event or transit of Venus had last occurred in 1882, so no one alive till June 8, 2004 had ever witnessed the transit of Venus.

The Physics Deptt organised viewing of this grand event on the hot day of 8th June 2004. A small portable telescope, generously offered by Prof. M. Zahid, was installed on the terrace of the Science Lecture Theatre, complete with a solar filter.

Faculty and students from the physics and other departments came and shared the excitement by watching the event. As it was the admission season, fresh applicants and their guardians also had a pleasant surprise when they came to know of the viewing facility right here. They also watched the event.
